Did you know? White-tailed deer have excellent hearing and can detect small noises from up to a quarter of a mile away. The funnel-shaped area inside their ears helps them accurately determine how far away a sound is. 🦌✨ Spotted during this week’s fauna survey, this stunning buck was caught on camera by photographer Bill J. Boyd, out exploring our trails.

As fall settles in, it’s the perfect time to visit the gardens, enjoy the cooler weather to come, and see who else might be roaming the wildflower meadows. 🍂🌼

Come see if you can spot some of our wildlife! Plan your visit at the link in our bio.

Meet the Gulf muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris), a blush-colored Texas native that proves grasses can be just as show-stopping as flowers. While everyone loves a good bloom, native grasses like gulf muhly add texture, movement, and beauty to your landscape - and they’re drought tolerant!

It’s the third weekend of our Fall Native Plant Sale, and we have a variety of underrated native Texas grasses ready to transform your garden. Come see for yourself why grasses deserve more love!

It’s incredible what you can discover when you slow down and take a closer look. One of our gardeners recently had a surprise visitor - a Giant Ichneumon Wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus).

While it may look a little intimidating, this wasp is a natural pest manager, quietly working to keep ecosystems in balance. With its long tail-like ovipositor, the Ichneumon wasp lays its eggs inside dead deciduous trees. Larvae feed on wood-boring insects, stopping them from causing further structural damage to trees.

We’re excited to join the @texasparkswildlife Texas Pollinator BioBlitz from Oct. 11–27! 🐝🦋 Help us celebrate the pollinators that keep our ecosystem thriving - bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, nectar-feeding bats, and more.

Want to learn about our nectar-loving friends up close? Visit our Power the Migration exhibit to discover the world of monarch butterflies! Then, as you explore the gardens, be sure to share your pollinator sightings on Instagram, Facebook, or iNaturalist using #TXpollinators.

Mealy blue sage (Salvia farinacea) is a Texas native that lights up gardens with its tall, spiky blue blooms - a magnet for pollinators like this bumblebee. Those pale markings on the petals? They act like landing strips, guiding visitors straight to the nectar. With deadheading, this beautiful perennial can keep your garden buzzing with bees, butterflies and hummingbirds into late autumn. 🐝🌿

Starting this weekend, our Fall Native Plant Sale is open to all! Check out the plant list at the link in our bio. Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and free to attend. Fall is the best time to plant - come by and stock up!
