Birthday Parties Lead Attendant

We are seeking a friendly, science savvy person with a passion for entertaining and educating children to lead ecology-themed birthday parties and assist the education staff by facilitating educational activities, programs, and other events as needed at the Wildflower Center.

Essential Functions

Lead two-hour birthday party programs for children ages 1 to 11 years old. Programs include an explanation of the lesson, hands-on investigation, outdoor exploration, active movement or games, and a craft. Parties are held at the Wildflower Center in an outdoor garden setting.

Assists in maintaining education spaces including the Little House, the Little House Garden, picnic areas, nature play equipment, litter removal and general upkeep.

Greets and engages families to provide meaningful and positive experiences. Helps answer questions relating to the Wildflower Center.

Coordinates and communicates with members of all departments and is proactive in team efforts to achieve departmental goals.

Exhibits reliable and punctual attendance. Complies with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Reports any and all unsafe activity to supervisors and safety coordinator.

Works independently and unsupervised on scheduled weekends. Performs all duties as assigned.

This is an intermittent weekend position that requires a commitment of 3 1/2 hours per birthday party.

Qualifications

At least two years’ experience working with children in an informal or formal setting, including one year of experience working with children and families.
A minimum of one year customer service experience in informal learning institutions (botanic garden, nature center, museum, recreation center or similar).
Must work well with diverse groups of people, be detail oriented and able to set priorities; must take direction well and have excellent communication skills.
Ability to think creatively and respond calmly and quickly in stressful situations.
Must be in possession of a current, valid Texas driver’s license.
Must complete CW 514 (UTS Child Protection Training) module within first 30 days of employment.
Must complete UT online drivers training within first 30 days of employment.
Has or is willing to obtain first aid and CPR certification within first 30 days of employment. Attention to safety is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Central Texas native plants
Experience in facilitating science and nature programs for youth
Spanish language skills

Physical and Environmental Demands

Must be able to work outside in all types of weather.
Moderate physical activity will be required (bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, endurance activities).

Schedule and Pay Rate

Intermittent schedule on an as-needed basis, usually Saturdays and Sundays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., all seasons. No set hours guaranteed.
The pay rate is $15 per hour.
This position is temporary/seasonal, part time and benefits exempt.
