New Teresa Autumn Sage to first be featured at Wildflower Center’s upcoming annual Fall Plant Sale and Gardening Festival

The newest variation of Autumn Sage, Salvia greggii ‘Teresa’, will now be propagated by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The Wildflower Center and David Steinbrunner have entered into a one-year, renewable agreement in which the Wildflower Center acquires the right to propagate and sell the patent-pending plant throughout Texas.

Discovered on Steinbrunner’s property in Hunt, Texas, Teresa’s unique flower is white with three pink stripes. All other varieties of Autumn sage feature solid red, purple, or pink blooms. Similar to other Salvia varieties, Teresa is a deer resistant, semi-evergreen perennial that blooms in the spring, summer, and fall. One notable difference between Teresa and other Salvia varieties is its more compact size and sturdier limbs.

“I am pleased to work with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to produce and distribute Teresa,” said Steinbrunner. “The Wildflower Center’s plant knowledge, attention to detail, and connections with other Texas nurseries make it an ideal partner.”

The Wildflower Center plans to contract with and manage growing operations of other Texas nurseries across the state. This will increase the profitability the Wildflower Center stands to gain.

“This partnership allows The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to offer a unique, new plant to gardeners across the state, and will help the Center spread our message about the beauty and ecological benefits of native plants,” said Susan K. Rieff, executive director of the Wildflower Center.

The Center will first offer Teresa at its annual Fall Plant Sale and Gardening Festival held on October 9 and 10. More than 23,000 plants, including 300 native species, will be for sale. Additionally, the festival will feature walks, talks and demonstrations by some of Central Texas’ native plant experts and Wildflower Center staff.
