We are proud to present the short film, “a seed a deer a seed,” by Marianne Hoffmeister Castro, this year’s St. Elmo Arts Fellow. This screening will take place in our Little House. Entry is free with the cost of general admission.
“a seed a deer a seed” is a short film that examines the Wildflower Center’s conservation efforts by threading together different imagery and visual registers, such as the tactility of the Center’s vegetation surveys, nocturnal footage of animals in the area, archival material from the herbarium, and fragments of conversations with Conservationist Botanist Minette Marr. Its focus on the care and management of a local ecosystem allows the film to highlight the alliances and challenges between plant, animal and human communities.
Marianne Hoffmeister Castro (1989) is a Chilean artist currently based in the United States. Her work examines the representation of nature and animality in the contemporary western world through drawing, installation, video, experimental writing and research-based processes. Hoffmeister Castro has exhibited and screened work in Chile, the United States, Ecuador, Peru, Switzerland, Korea, and elsewhere. She is the current artist–in–residence at Núcleo de Lenguaje y Creación at Universidad de las Américas and the recipient of the 2022 – 2023 St. Elmo Arts Residency and Fellowship.
