"Quite intermediate between the parent species in those particulars in which they differ; especially in the length of the cleistogamous flowers and of the auricles of the sepals, characters in which the two species are in extreme contrast." (Reslit: 2847). Taller, more cespitose, with less obtuse leaves, bearing smaller flowers on longer peduncles than parent Viola nephrophylla. (Reslit:2847)

Leaf: "... relatively narrow leaf-blade, less than two inches wide ..." (Bibref: 1797).
Flower: "...less than two inches wide; like V. cucullata in the strongly clavate beard of its lateral petals; like V. nephrophylla in its ovoid cleistogamous flowers, not subulate as in V. cucullata; like V. cucullata in its glabrous spurred petals, not villous as in V. nephrophylla."
