Hybrid perennial. Stemless. Growing in moist, shady soils. Shows morphological features intermediate between the parent species. Leaves intermediate between the parent species. "Slight pubescence on the petiole and on the margin of the leaf and on the auricles of the sepals." (Reslit: 2845). Capsules are produced from cleistogamous flowers containing few viable seeds. However, the fertile seeds produce vigorous plants.

Hybrid progeny of Viola affinis and V. septentrionalis. Published as an unnamed hybrid by Ezra Brainerd (Reslit: 2845) and subsequently as Viola ×champlainensis by Homer D. House. (Bibref: 1795).
