Orontium aquaticum

Orontium aquaticum L.

Goldenclub, Neverwet

Araceae (Arum Family)

Synonym(s):

USDA Symbol: ORAQ

USDA Native Status: L48 (N)

An aquatic with long-stalked leaves, and a golden yellow, club-like spadix. Goldenclub has simple, long-petioled, often floating, dark-green, velvety, basal leaves. The club-shaped golden-yellow spadix is lax or ascending on a green scape and emerges 1/2-1 1/2 ft. above the water. The flower is followed by green fruits.

This emergent perennial is of striking beauty, especially when seen against the backdrop of dark open waters in southern swamps. Its Latin generic name derives from a plant that grows in the Orontes River of Syria.
