This rank-growing, bushy plant, up to 5 feet tall, has alternate leaves 1-1 3/4 inches long and half as wide, spiny-toothed, and clasping the stem half way around or more. It has a strong odor, neither pleasing nor disagreeable. The many rows of tough, green bracts that surround the flower head are quite attractive when it is in bud. The flower head is yellow, with 20-30 narrow, pointed ray flowers and many yellow disc flowers.
