Shot: A plant in situ. Photographer's note: "I discovered this location for the single-sorus spleenwort on June 18, 1983. It is one of two known locations for the fern in Jackson County, Alabama. There are upwards of 20 plants growing in the sinkhole associated with a cave. Most of the plant are large and I suspect very old. Over the last 26 years I have seen the plants severely damaged by extreme cold but they always survive. This micro-habitat is protected by 56 degree F. air blowing out of a cave all summer. Asplenium monanthes is a tropical species that lives at temperature moderated elevations over much of its range."
