Densely or loosely clusters stems rise 1-2 ft. Basal leaves are linear and usually less than a third as long as the stem. The terminal seed head is loosely branched and bears small, greenish spikelets. Long narrow "leaves" subtend the seed head, extending above it.
A member of the family Juncaceae which includes herbs, rarely shrubs, with mostly grass-like leaves, usually in a basal tuft, and small greenish or brownish flower in dense spikes or heads or sometimes in loose clusters or even solitary.
