Size Notes: Up to about 100 feet tall. Occasionally up to about 150 feet tall with 5 foot diameter trunk.
Leaf: Leaves 6-12 inches long by 3-6 inches wide
Fruit: Acorns 1-3, annual, ovoid-ellipsoid or oblong, up to about 2 inches. Cup hemispheric or turbinate, 2 inches deep by almost 2-1/2 inches wide, enclosing 1/2-7/8 nut or more. Scales near margins of cup often with soft awns forming fringe around nut.

Native Habitat: Bottomlands, riparian slopes, poorly drained areas, prairies, usually on limestone or calcareous clays. In northwest part of range also found on dry slopes and ridges.
