Lancewood is a member of the laurel family (family Lauraceae) which includes aromatic plants, mainly trees and shrubs, with inconspicuous yellow or green flowers. There are about 40 genera and 1,000 species, occurring mostly in tropical zones. Some are ornamentals and some provide avocados, bay leaves and cinnamon.
