Clusters of creamy-yellow, rayless flower heads hanging from short branches at tips of leafless stalks borne in upper axils of leafy stems.
This large and complex genus consists mostly of shrubs. Some were used medicinally by Native Americans.

Native Distribution: Eastern Washington south to Baja California and east to western Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.
Native Habitat: Banks, cliffs, and canyons at moderately high elevations, mostly in forests.
