Description: Background - The primary mission at the Naval Air Station Kingsville (NASK) is to train Student Naval Aviators for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. NASK is home to Training Air Wing TWO and several other tenant commands, military as well as civilian, with a total complement of approximately 500 active duty, 182 reservists, 218 civilian, and 600 contract maintenance personnel. Native plants thrive in extreme temperatures in contrast to introduced or genetically modified plants. A demonstration pollinator garden was installed three years ago tucked away behind the Auto Center and another by the Public Works Department. Twenty-one butterfly species, including monarchs, are present and +55 native plant species are throughout. These gardens have endured an extended freeze, flood, and extreme heat. NASK staff continues to increase plant diversity which facilitates increased pollinator numbers and variety. As part of public outreach, these gardens are included as a City of Kingsville Monarch City USA garden to assist population recovery.
