Original Format: Digital
Orientation: Landscape
Shot: Fronds removed from their plants and layed out on a rock for comparison. The two fronds on the center are this species (the hybrid progeny of the other two species). The two fronds on the left are Dryopteris celsa and the two fronds on the right are Dryopteris intermedia. Sori are visible on the the fronds showing their abaxial surfaces. Photographer's note: "I learned of this hybrid location from Dr. Murray Evans (University of Tennessee). I first visited the site April 28, 1984. There was a single clump of the hybrid with both parents present. The Dryopteris celsa population is incredibly healthy. There were fronds up to a meter tall. We found the original hybrid cluster then found a second even larger population of the hybrid that wasn't there in 1984."
