Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: When to plant bluebonnet seed
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
When do I put out Bluebonnet seed? Do I soak them first? Thank You.ANSWER:
They should be planted now, mid-October, and certainly no later than mid-November. Since they have very hard seed coats, they will need to be treated to make them permeable to water. You can read all about how to prepare, plant and perpetuate your bluebonnets in "How to Grow Bluebonnets" on our How to Articles page. You can also find information on growing Lupinus texensis (Texas bluebonnet) in the Native Plant Database.
