Abstract
Examines the effects of removing two dominant tallgrass prairie species, Andropogon gerardii and Sorghastrum nutans, in Kansas. The effects of fertilizer addition were also tested. Removing A. gerardii increased photosynthesis and tiller mass in S. nutans. However, S. nutans removal had little effect on A. gerardii. Fertilizer increased productions of tillers and flowers in S. nutans but not A. gerardii. These results suggest asymmetric competition between the species and explains the greater abundance of A. gerardii in tallgrass prairie.Suggested Citation
