It can exist as gametophyte colonies out of the normal range and habitat. The gametophytes reproduce by multicell gemmae. The fern was discovered on Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia in 1938 where it grew in crevices of acidic rock. Graves Mountain was mostly quarried away for mineral extraction. The other location where the fern exist on rock is the Rocky Creek Gorge. It is not common there but most often exist as gametophyte colonies. It occasionally produces sporophytes with normal but small fronds. These are some of the largest I have seen."
