Photographer's note: "Mature Pinus serotina tower over characteristic pocosin shrubs along stream in the Carolina Sandhills In the coastal areas, this species tends to be small. In its favored locations, including the dense pocosins of the sandhills, trees often reach 60 feet plus and are quite handsome. The distinctive cones differentiate them from loblolly neighbors."
