Original Format: Digital Orientation: Portrait Shot: Close up of a flowering plant ex situ. Photographer's note: "Riverweed is an obscure aquatic plant that can be locally abundant in rivers and streams of reasonable water quality. It is uncommon in most areas of the south. I occasionally see the plant when I am working. I guess that says something about the quality of the streams I usually work in. I was working in South Carolina last week and after work I waded out into the beautiful Congaree River just below the confluence of the Broad and Saluda Rivers. Riverweed coated many of the submerged rocks. I noticed on some of the patches there were very small white structures. Upon closer inspection I determined they were flowers. All the flowers I saw were under water. I finally found a rock that was small enough to move to the surface for photos. The flowers are tiny. I assume that most colonies never bloom or simply go unnoticed. None of my botanist friends have ever seen it bloom" Date Taken: 2010-07-07 NPIN Image Id: 45906
