Shot: Close-up of a stem with developing fruits. Photographer's note: "This was a big mystery. I found this small tree in flower today and photographed it. I had no idea what it was. Later, I consulted with my friend Steve Bowling and we concluded that it was a Hamamelis but we didn't know which species. Hamamelis virginiana is the common species around here but blooms in the fall. They are not flowers at all but developing fruit of the American witch hazel."
