Shot: Close-up of flowers. Photographer's note: "Pondspice is a Threatened species in Georgia. There are numerous historic records for this species in the State but it has become increasingly rare. I suspect this is largely due to habitat destruction and modification. This site is one of the largest known for the species but it is under change. Tickets of the shrub are growing around what was once a large ephemeral pond full of pond cypress (Taxodium ascendens). Looks to me like it has been years since the pond was full of water. It is becoming invaded by nearby upland species like longleaf pines (Pinus palustris)."
