Native Plants

Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Can rose Zephirine Drouhin damage brick from Springfield IL
Answered by: Barbara Medford
QUESTION:
Can ZÉPHIRINE DROUHIN damage brick?ANSWER:
Even though most roses are non-native, originating in China, we have had personal experience with growing the rose. It will not damage brick, because it has no way to cling to brick. It is called a "climber," but in actuality climbing roses are roses with long canes. It not only will not damage your brick but you will have to construct a trellis or other support and attach the canes to it with plant ties. See this article from Dave's Garden on Zephirine Drouhin.
