Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Culture of Indian paintbrush
Answered by: Barbara Medford
QUESTION:
I have never tried to plant the Indian Paintbrush flower before, and I'm not sure what the culture is besides what's on the LBJ Wildflower center website. Are there any tricks for getting a good showing for these?ANSWER:
The Castilleja indivisa (entireleaf Indian paintbrush) is one of the more spectacular additions to the spring Texas landscape. Since it needs some cold, wet weather before it germinates, it would be well to get the seed in the ground as soon as possible if you are planning a show for this coming spring.
