Native Plants

Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Types of Eragrostis lovegrasses that will survive in Northern Wisconsin
Answered by: Joe Marcus
QUESTION:
I am interested in plains lovegrass, and know that it primarily grows in southern climates. Do you think it could thrive in northern Wisconsin if it is planted in a protected area? Could it survive the low winter temps?ANSWER:
It is very unlikely Plains Lovegrass, Eragrostis intermedia would survive the northern Wisconsin winters, even in a protected area. Happily, there are some other Lovegrassses that may perform well there including, Eragrostis spectabilis, Purple Lovegrass or Petticoat Climber and Eragrostis capillaris, Lace Grass - which may be marginal in northern Wisconsin.
