Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Fast growing native hedges for Sachse, TX
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
I just bought a house in Sachse, Tx and want to plant a privacy hedge. It will be about 220' long and I want it to grow to at least 10'-12' high. I also want it to be fast growing and be evergreen. Any suggestions?ANSWER:
These first three shrubs/trees are fast-growing, evergreen and native to North Central Texas:Prunus caroliniana (Carolina laurelcherry)
The final two are also evergreen, native to North Central Texas, and would make a very good privacy hedge. Unfortunately, they are slower growing than the first three:
Sophora secundiflora (mountain laurel)
