Subject: Invasive Plants Comments: From Books in Print This identification guide highlights invasive plants that can case economic and ecological damage to crops, range, forests, and wildlands in the West. Most of these problematic plants are non-natives that now grow in locations beyond their known historic range. A non-native designation can refer to a plant from other continents, regions, or ecosystems. Once in a new area, these plants can establish and spread, free from their natural competitors. Some invasive plants are also referred to as noxious weeds. The term "noxious" is a legal definition for plants that have been determined to be major problems in agricultural and rangeland ecosystems; the federal government and many states have compiled lists of "noxious" plants. Many of the weeds in this guide are listed in the regional weed-free forage standards that are intended to reduce the spread of invasive plants in natural areas through the movement of hay and mulch. The Pocket Naturalist series is an introduction to common plants and animals and natural phenomena. Each pocket-sized, folding guide highlights up to 150 species and most feature a map highlighting prominent sanctuaries and outstanding natural attractions. Each is laminated for durability.
