An umbel of yellow to orange, star-like flowers atop a stem with 1 narrow, grass-like leaf at base.

The golden, star-like flowers with separate petal-like parts distinguish this genus. The similar San Diego Goldenstars (Muilla clevelandii) is threatened by urbanization; it has several leaves, each less than 1/8" (3 mm) wide, and the flap at the base of each stamen is not notched.
