Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?

A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.

QUESTION:

Hi! I would like to plant a nut tree in Orlando, FL. What would you recommend?

ANSWER:

Here are nut trees that grow in Orange County, Florida:

Carya glabra, pignut hickory

Carya floridana, scrub hickory and more information and a photo

Carya illinoinensis (pecan)

Castanea pumila (chinkapin) and more information and photos

Carya alba (mockernut hickory) grows in the nearby counties of Volusia and Sumter, but is not recorded by the USDA Plants Database as occurring in Orange County.
