A common, taprooted perennial native to sandy soils on the coastal plain of south-central US and northern Mexico. It forms showy colonies of plants about 3 feet tall. Ratibida peduncularis var. picta is endemic to Texas, less common than R. p. var. peduncularis, and bears maroon-colored ray flowers.
This species is often confused with the similar, but much more wide-ranging relative, Ratibida columnifera, but lacks stem leaves near the flower heads. The two species sometimes hybridize.
