Found in marshes of northeastern North America from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia, Scirpus longii is listed as a species of special concern by SARA (Species at Risk Act) in Canada and is considered of special concern in Connecticut, threatened in Maine and Massachusetts, and endangered in New Jersey and Rhode Island. Though large populations can be found, it rarely flowers, as sexual reproduction is triggered by fire.
