A branching plant with one-sided, coiled clusters of light blue, lavender, or white flowers with deeply fringed petals.

The strikingly fringed petals, especially beautiful under a hand lens, characterize this spring wildflower of the Great Smoky Mountains, where it can occur in abundance.
