Clumps of stems, up to 16 in. tall, rise from a taproot. Basal leaves are oblong and petiolate; those on the stem are lineara and sessile. The tubular flowers with lobed lips vary considerably in color from violet to blue-purple. They are paler and hairy within. Flowers occur in elongate, terminal clusters.
