Native Distribution: US Southeast, Mississippi River valley states, Great Lake states and eastern Great Plains.
Native Habitat: Mostly on shallow, calcareous soils on barrens, limestone glades and on limestone bluffs. In the Ozark Mountains it also occurs in soils on sandstone and granitic substrates.
