Fraxinus anomala var. lowellii
Fraxinus anomala Torr. ex S. Watson var. lowellii (Sarg.) Little
Singleleaf Ash, Lowell Ash
Oleaceae (Olive Family)
Synonym(s): Fraxinus lowellii
USDA Symbol: FRANL
USDA Native Status: L48 (N)
Many-branched shrub or sometimes a small tree with short trunk and rounded crown.
This tree was named in 1917 for its discoverer, Percival Lowell (1855-1916), an American astronomer. It is closely related to Singleleaf Ash and is now regarded as a variety of that species. Where the ranges meet, some trees have an intermediate number of leaflets. The reduction to one leaflet in Singleleaf Ash is unusual for ashes and is apparently an adaptation to a dry climate.
