USDA Native Status: L48 (N)

A low, sometimes straggly, shrub with gray stems streaked with light brown. Growing from crevices in limestone cliffs and on steep, wooded slopes. Leaf blades variable in size and shape, from 3/4 inch long with a wavy margin and a tapered base to 41/2 inches long and resembling an arrowhead with deeply scalloped to coarsely toothed edges. Leaf blade upper surface green, the lower grayish green and covered with crystalline glands and fine hairs barely visible under a l0x hand lens. Flowers minute, in tight clusters on shoots extending above the leaves, the clusters and shoots covered with gray or tawny hairs. Flowers present throughout the summer.
