"Individual flowers can be up to 3/4 inch and are borne in groups of 3-6 from the axils of the uppermost bractlike leaves. The flowers have prominent, conspicuously in-curving hoods, but no horns. The stem is stout, unbranched, and 12-32 inches tall. The leaves are 1-3 inches long, thick, opposite, sessile and oblong to oval in outline, though those near the base are often small and bractlike. Crushed or broken stems, leaves, and flower stems produce a sticky, milky sap. The fruit is a 5-7 inch follicle that splits at maturity to expose numerous seeds, each with a cottony appendage, or coma." (Bibref 1610)
