Plant Characteristics

Duration: Perennial
Habit: Grass/Grass-like
Leaf: The upper surface of the leaf blade has stiff, upright hairs growing from between the leaf veins. The main leaves have ear-like blades and bend outward away from the sheath.
Flower: The panicle has long side branches that spread upward, making it look oval. Parts of the glume and lower lemma often have reddish streaks, and their hairs are usually reddish or tipped with red or pink. The base where the leaf meets the stem is also red and lined with short, fine hairs.

Native Distribution: Occurs in southern Arkansas into Louisiana and eastern Texas.
Native Habitat: Found in pine and loblolly savanna and flatwoods, coastal prairies, and bog margins.

Soil Description: Grows in sandy loam of swales and bogs.
