Abstract

Compares species in the genus Pityopsis based on fire-dependent flowering (FDF) to determine when species evolved to have this trait. Results suggested that 1) FDF occurred in one taxonomic group but not another, 2) FDF occurred in habitats that had a dense groundcover in years between fire, and 3) FDF occurred in regions with naturally high incidences of lightning and fire.
