Purpose of Position

Assists the Horticulture department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections and grounds through horticultural practices and volunteer management. Provides guest assistance and ensures excellent guest experience. Please note: This position is temporary/seasonal, part time and benefits exempt.

Essential Functions

Assists the Horticulture department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections and grounds.
Installs and cares for plant materials. Rakes, weeds, mows, waters, mulches, prunes and shapes. Participates in bed preparation and construction and repairs decomposed granite paths. Safely and effectively uses hand tools and light power equipment. Updates plant identification signage. Removes garden debris (including human-generated litter, fallen branches and animal scat). Collects and processes seeds.


May work with regular volunteers and community service volunteers.


Effectively coordinates and communicates with members of the horticulture staff and all other departments. Assists the public in answering questions relating to the Wildflower Center and horticulture. Strives to ensure a positive guest experiences. Performs associated administrative duties.

Event Support

Participates in educational and mission-related activities such as plant sales, nursery operations and special events.

Other related functions as assigned. May require occasional schedule shifts or overtime for mission-related events. All employees must adhere to our safety guidelines. Read the safety guidelines here.


Minimum one year professional horticultural experience.
Must have knowledge of horticultural techniques, plant materials and pathologies.
Attention to safety and assisting guests is essential.
Cooperate and communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse group of teammates, volunteers and guests.
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email) required.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Moderate physical activity (bending, lifting, pushing/pulling), stamina and the ability to lift 50 pounds required.
Must be able to work outside in all types of weather.
Ability to maneuver in narrow or confined places around fragile plants required.
