Fortlandia Exhibition Assistant

We are seeking enthusiastic, outdoor-loving, safety-minded assistants for our 2021-22 season of Fortlandia, an interactive exhibition of original forts by local artists, architects and designers. Exhibition assistants will work in our Texas Arboretum to assist guests, monitor the condition of the forts, and ensure that safety guidelines are being followed.

Essential Functions

Serves as an attendant at the Fortlandia exhibition in the Mollie Steves Zachry Texas Arboretum. Provides guests with assistance and answers questions related to the forts or the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Monitors the condition of each fort and guest behavior to ensure everyone is safe. Provides wayfinding information, first-aid supplies and maps when requested or needed. Provides assistance in completion of landscape maintenance.

Greets and interacts with guests while following safety guidelines.
Provides information about the forts in the exhibition to guests.
Monitors guests and their interactions with the forts to ensure safe behavior.
Aids in reuniting guests who have become separated from their family members.
Drives golf cart to provide rides in emergencies, haul materials and refill water stations.
Reports suspicious or dangerous behavior to the University of Texas Police Department.

Monitors exhibition area on foot and performs safety checks on forts and signage.
Reports, ropes off and may assist in repairing any broken, sharp or unstable exhibition features.
Picks up any trash and disposes of it appropriately.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Assists with educational programming in the exhibition as needed.
Completes required paperwork such as incident reports for injuries.
Sends weekend summaries to Fortlandia staff and other communications as needed.
Complies with all safety policies, practices and procedures of the Wildflower Center.
Performs other relevant duties as assigned.
Exhibits reliable and punctual attendance.

Qualifications

High school diploma.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Attention to safety is essential. Certified in first aid and CPR or willing to become certified.
Ability to respond calmly and quickly in stressful situations.
Must be enthusiastic about working with diverse groups of people and have a desire to assist guests of all ages and abilities.
Ability to use handheld power tools, rakes, shovels, mowers, string trimmers and leaf blowers.
Ability to walk on trails and natural ground cover for hours at a time.
Must be able to work outside and in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to engage in moderate physical activity (bending, lifting, pushing/pulling).
Possess a commitment to the garden’s mission of connecting people with plants with a demonstrated interest in native plants and/or gardening.

Other Requirements

Possession of a current, valid Texas driver’s license.
Will be required to undergo a background check prior to being hired and complete child protection training upon hiring

Schedule and Pay Rate

This position reports for 19 hours per week from Sept. 20, 2021 – Feb. 11, 2022.
Hours are weekdays and weekends between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The pay rate is $15 per hour.
This position is temporary/seasonal, part time and benefits exempt.
