Description: Annual, 20-40 cm tall, from a coarse fibrous root. Stem reddish-green below, lighter above. Nodes swollen, sparsely pubescent/hirsute. White sap exudes when cut. Leaves opposite, lanceolate, serrate, petiolate, arcuate, sparsely strigose. Cyathia terminal in irregular clusters subtended by opposite leaves (pale but never discolored basally).
