Reed, Greg

Greg Reed is a retired airline captain and a former and once again pro photographer. He retired in 2014 after a 34-year aviation career, and is now renewing his love of the visual arts, in particular, outdoor and botanical imaging.

At age 10 or 12 Greg Reed began taking outdoor photos in black-and-white with his father’s old Kodak 120 folding camera. By the time he was in high school, he was using his Petri FT w/ 55mm w/f1.8 Prime lens. Greg was the official Stonewall Jackson High School yearbook photographer during his junior & senior years. He had a black-and-white negative developing & printing darkroom. He also processed color slides prior to his high school graduation.

Upon his graduation in 1972, Reed's father gifted him with a new Mamiya C220 camera, with a Mamiya-Sekor 80mm f 2.8 Prime lens. Within a few years Greg added two Nikkormat FTN camera bodies and several lenses. He shot his first commercial job in 1972.

The period between 1981 and 2004 was a slow time for Reed's photography as he helped raise two daughters while supporting his family via aviation. As Greg's retirement approached he began again avidly pursuing his lifelong love of the visual arts. Since his retirement, Reed has had the time to hone his digital imaging and Photoshop skills -- an ongoing process! He has developed a particular interest in outdoor and botanical imaging with his modest photographic equipment. "After all," he says, "a regional airline pilot’s pension is very modest."

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is grateful to Greg Reed for his support in sharing his photography with us and the world.
