Shot: Close-up of plants. Photographer's note: "The Appalachian shoestring fern only exit as a gametophyte in protected silica based rock habitats throughout the Appalachian Plateau region. They always grow in very low light conditions with ample humidity but not in contact with water. The species reproduces by multi-cell gemmae that form on the apex cells of the gametophyte lobes. The gemmae are transported by small animals like salamanders. The fern is rather abundant in proper habitats. The only species of Vittaria in the U.S. that produces sporophytes is Vittaria lineata."
