The known range was Madison and Jackson Counties, Alabama, and Franklin and Grundy Counties, Tennessee. Very few sites exist for the species. Plants seem to prefer small limestone cliffs and other vertical limestone outcrops. Last fall (2014), botanist Max Medley found some non-blooming Clematis plants high on the side of Pigeon Mountain. It was impossible for him to identify them to species because they were not in bloom. Last Friday (May 8, 2015), a group consisting of Max Medley, Tom Patrick (State Botanist), Dwayne Estes (Austin Peay State University), and Rebecca Byrd were botanizing on Pigeon Mountain in the vicinity of where Max had previously found the unknown Clematis. Dwayne found the Clematis again and with some looking found one with flower buds. That was enough for him to positively identify it as Clematis morefieldii. This is a major range extension. On Saturday (May 16, 2015), I got fairly precise directions to the site and managed to locate two plants in bloom. Consistent with the Alabama sites I have seen, the plants grow in vertical or nearly vertically limestone outcrops then sprawl into the adjacent vegetation."
