Shot: A colony of plants. Photographer's note: "American pillwort is a fern or very closely related, believe it or not. I have looked for this thing in Georgia for the last 30 years. I consider it rare but it may just be easily overlooked. The leaves are very grass like and often grow with grasses or other narrow bladed plants in aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats. In Georgia, they exclusively grow in association with granite or gneiss outcrops. The two round structures seen in this image are immature sporocarps. Spores are produced in these structures."
