Shot: Close-up of an inflorescence. Photographer's note: "Pinkshell azalea is endemic to higher elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is only known from a few counties in North Carolina. There is one unverified report from Rabun County, Georgia. The species blooms before the leaves appear. There are many that bloom along the Blue Ridge Parkway and approach roads in the vicinity of Black Balsam Knob. It is spectacular."
