Shot: Close-up of an inflorescence. Photographer's note: "American ginseng has all but disappeared over much of its natural range because of the pressures of the herbal industry. Because it is worth lots of money, ruthless collection methods often prevail and whole patches are dug up. Even in remaining strongholds like Great Smoky National Park, poacher will dig up every last plant. Somehow, there are a few remaining plants in the Atlanta metro area in one little area that only three of us know about. "
