Image Information

Photographer: Cressler, Alan
County: Chattooga
State: GA
Location Notes: Taylor Ridge Shale Glades, Taylor Ridge, Chattahoochee National Forest. This is a recently discovered habitat in Georgia. I located an extensive area of shale glades while hiking on Taylor Ridge. The glades are developed on a 100 foot thick thinly bedded shale in the Silurian age Red Mountain Formation. The plant community is unusual. The dominate species in the glades is Hairy Lipfern, Cheilanthes lanosa. We have only began to discover the rare plants that exist in and around the glades.
