Delphinium alabamicum (Alabama larkspur) #38537

Image Information

Photographer: Cressler, Alan
County: Chattooga
State: GA
Location Notes: Taylor Ridge Shale Glades, Taylor Ridge, Chattahoochee National Forest. "Alabama Larkspur was reported from Georgia based on an old collection from the Rockmart area. The site was likely destroyed by quarrying. Recent attempts to locate the species in that area have failed. In the spring of 2013, Max Medley was botanizing in the shale glades area and found plants he suspected might be the Alabama Larkspur. He never returned to examine the fruit which are important for identification. Today, Steve Bowling and I returned to the shale glades area and found many plants of a larkspur that keyed well to the Alabama Larkspur. This included the fruit. Plants were scattered in open woods developed on Ordovician age Chickamauga Limestone. We also found plants scattered in and around the shale glades developed on Silurian age Red Mountain Formation. Flower colors were highly variable." -- Alan Cressler
